Overview of Vitiligo

Vitiligo is a state in which white patches develop on the skin. Any area on the body can be affected and most people with vitiligo have white patches in many areas. The extent and rate of color loss from vitiligo are irregular. Normally, the color of hair and skin is determined by melanin. Vitiligo happens when the cells that produce melanin die or stop functioning. It is an autoimmune condition in which the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks and destroys certain cells within the body.

Causes

Vitiligo occurs when pigment-producing cells (melanocytes) die or stop producing melanin – the pigment that gives your skin, hair and eye color.

Symptoms
